We respect your privacy
We provide this notice to explain our online information practices. By visiting the BC and Yukon Division of the Canadian Cancer Society at
www.bc.cancer.ca, you are accepting the practices described in this privacy notice.
Two types of information are collected:
There are instances when the Canadian Cancer Society requests individually identifiable information from web site visitors. Information we may request includes:
Your first and last name, street address, city, province, postal code, country, telephone number, e-mail address and nature of your visit (such as submitting a volunteer application form or accessing cancer information).
We only use this information to track the service we provide to communities in our jurisdiction. This information helps us improve our web site, provide more relevant information to our site visitors and update our site as need be. Potential volunteers who complete the online application form are assured of confidentiality. Your information is secure and will not be shared with any other organization.
When you make an online donation:
- We process standard credit card information (card number, card type, expiration date) via a secure, encrypted Secure Socket Layer (SSL). SSL is the proven standard for secure web messaging transactions.
- At the present time, we do not use cookies. A cookie is a unique identifier that a web server places on your computer. Cookies also allow for customized content. Should the Canadian Cancer Society begin using cookies, it will be reflected in this privacy policy.
- In the case of memorial contributions and in-honour contributions, a personalized acknowledgement card is sent to a designated recipient, usually the family member of the deceased or the honouree. Therefore, we will request the name, address, city, province, postal code, country and telephone number for your designated acknowledgement card recipient. This information is only used for the purpose of sending the acknowledgement card.
- We endeavour to contact all online donors with the purpose of soliciting future contributions. Donors may be contacted via mail or telephone. If a donor does not wish to be contacted, we will honour this request. We may also ask for your e-mail address to provide you with electronic copies of our newsletters, as they become available online.
- Occasionally, the Canadian Cancer Society may contact individuals who have provided their individually identifiable information through the web site in order to conduct surveys seeking feedback. These surveys are used to improve our level of service to you and will not be shared with other organizations.
Aggregate information
In addition to information provided by our visitors, we use the normal Internet tracking tools associated with standard Internet protocols and web-based systems. This system information is typically stored in log files and the information is used for aggregate reporting. Aggregate reporting includes: total number of visitors, most visited sections, peak traffic times, etc. Log files are simply transaction records of the web server we maintain. Those logs are used for recording information, such as:
- service provider IP addresses
- browser versions
- referring web sites
- search terms used
- average number of pages requested
- average duration of visit
- total visitor traffic
We use aggregate information gathered from your visit to better design our web site. This information supplies us with a broad picture of how people use our web site in order to help manage our systems and to serve our audiences in an effective manner.
Donation information
We maintain records of all contributions to the Canadian Cancer Society. Personal information is private and confidential. Additionally, all information is stored in a secure location accessible only by authorized staff. We do not share or sell our donor lists with other organizations.
